A sample question, in the course style
A payment API is called over an unreliable network, so the same request is sometimes retried and delivered more than once. Charges must be applied only once even when a request arrives twice. Which approach meets this requirement?
- AIncrease the API Gateway timeout so clients stop retrying the request
- BProcess every request as it arrives and rely on the client to avoid sending duplicates
- CStore each charge in an Amazon SQS standard queue and process the queue twice for safety, trusting the queue's exactly-once delivery to remove duplicate charges
- DHave each request carry a unique idempotency key and record it with a DynamoDB conditional write so a repeated key is a no-op
Recording a client-supplied idempotency key with a DynamoDB conditional write (put-if-not-exists on the key) means the first request applies the charge and any retry with the same key is rejected as already-processed, giving an exactly-once effect over at-least-once delivery. Extending the timeout, trusting the client, or double-processing a standard queue all fail to deduplicate.
