A sample question, in the course style
A chief audit executive is scoping an engagement over a new customer-facing payment platform, and a mandatory Topical Requirement on cybersecurity applies to the area. How should this shape the engagement's objectives and scope?
- ACybersecurity may be added as an optional area to cover if time permits, because Topical Requirements are recommended good practice rather than mandatory elements
- BThe scope should be narrowed to exclude cybersecurity so a separate specialist IT audit can address it, because a dedicated IT audit would examine those controls in more depth, and would bring specialist IT skills a general engagement lacks
- CThe objectives and scope must incorporate assessing the governance, risk management, and controls for cybersecurity, because a Topical Requirement is mandatory wherever that topic is relevant to the engagement
- DSetting separate engagement objectives becomes unnecessary, because the Topical Requirement already prescribes what this engagement must cover for that topic
Topical Requirements are a mandatory 2025 Standards construct: when a covered topic such as cybersecurity is relevant to an engagement, the auditor must address its governance, risk management, and controls when determining objectives and scope.
